Electrolysis Hair RemovalExcess facial or body hair is annoying and embarrassing when you are unhappy with the way it makes you look and feel. Unwanted hair grows for many reasons and can be removed by many methods, some temporary, others semi-permanent and with electrolysis it is permanent. At our clinic we remove the vast majority of unwanted hair by Intensive Pulse Light (link) treatments (IPL). However, that is not right for everyone. IPL or any laser cannot reduce and eliminate white, very blond or red hairs, but electrolysis can. Also some people's skin is not suitable for IPL or laser so electrolysis is very a good option for them. Regardless of your skin colour electrolysis can prove successful in permanently removing the hair. Electrolysis has been used for over 140 years in successfully permanently removing unwanted hair. Not only the face but all other parts of the body can also be treated according to what you would like the hair growth pattern to be or not in this case. How does electrolysis work? A fine needle is inserted into the hair shaft and a small electric current, radio wave or heat is passed down the needle to kill the root of the hair so it does not grow back with the same force. After several treatments the hair just gives up and completely dies, leaving the skin permanently hairless. A sterile probe is used with every treatment and is disposed of afterwards as medical waste. The electrolysis machine itself determines the precise current needed for that particular hair. Any other equipment that comes into contact with your skin is put through a medical autoclave steriliser, just the same as when you visit your doctor, to eliminate any cross-contamination. We are a registered, monitored and inspected skin piercing establishment with a recognised background in natural medicine. What are the different types of electrolysis? There are three methods of electrolysis. They are: Multi-Probe or Galvanic Electrolysis This operates on direct current (DC). The pad is the positive electrode which is placed in the hand, on the foot or the body. The probes themselves are the negative electrodes, which when inserted into the follicles, produce hydroxyl ions in a solution known as lye and this chemically destroys the hair follicle. How much lye is produced is controlled by the current (measured in microamps) and the time that current is applied (measured in minutes and seconds). This method is used to treat areas of thick, dense hair to get the removal started. Thermolysis (also known as RF, shortwave or diathermy) This method
uses only one probe with a high-frequency alternating current (AC). A
short This is a faster method but with more hair regrowth. Blend Electrolysis This also uses a single probe and combines the above modalities to produce a small amount of heated lye to destroy follicular tissue. This is a slower method of removal but the efficiency is up to 80% to 90% per treatment. It is good for cleaning up areas that have already been worked on or on finer areas of hair growth. We choose the right methods for you at the particular stage of your treatment. To increase your comfort you can use local skin aesthetic so it is less sensitive. You can apply it at home to reduce your clinic time. What should
I do to prepare for an electrolysis treatment? What do I need to do after treatment? You are given precise written aftercare instructions so you know exactly what to do after treatment to maximise the condition of your skin and what you must do between treatments to prepare for your next visit. We recommend
the use of witch hazel. It really helps settle your skin down. You can
apply this at home, followed by aloe vera. How long does it take for the skin to settle down after a treatment? The skin will be red for around an hour or so, but should settle down after that. What is the situation regarding needles, contamination and hygiene? We use new, sterile probes for every treatment and the tweezers and other items go through an autoclave steriliser. Can I have it done on any part of the body? As long as
we can reach it, yes. What about skin colour? Some people may have issues with the pigmentation in their skin, which may be prone to discoloration or patches or over colouring. So laser or IPL cannot be used but electrolysis can. I have
a medical condition in that I recently had skin cancer. Can I have electrolysis? How many treatments will I need? Everybody needs different amounts because they have different hair growth and hair shaft thickness. We make assessments with every client and will advise you during your first consultation. How effective is electrolysis? Very effective
and as permanent as long as you stay in treatment until it is finished.
For some clients we may also able to treat the conditions that cause the unwanted hair growth in the first place. See our naturopathy services for more information. Our modern,
comfortable, air-conditioned clinic is designed specifically to afford
the client the best possible service we can offer.
